| So...I completed yet another day at the warehouse. I have began to feel like Santa's helper who is incharge of all of these christmas presents. It is getting down to the wire and these presents need to be shipped FAST!
HAHA...I feel like I have learned a whole lot while working at this job. I know that I've said it before, but I feel like this job really has taught me a lot about life. I know it may sound silly to think that a simple warehouse job can teach you so much, but it really has. I have learned a lot about the people that immigrated from Africa and why they left and why they ended up in Ohio. I have learned a lot about what life in Africa is like and how different parts of the continent can be so different. I have also been expected to become an expert on the customs of American Society. I get asked questions all the time that start with "In America is it normal to..." It is really interesting to see the aspects of our society that they question. They are things that I never really thought about from growing up in America and the issues that I would face if I were to move to an entirely different region of the world. I have learned how judgemental people can be and how they use outward appearance to make decisions about people.
Also, there are many people that are Muslim that I work with. And Moussa told me today that they have to pray 5 times a day. They even set up a room in the warehouse where they can go and pray. It is blocked off by the breakroom and it has a rug in it for them to pray on. I kind of wondered...because Moussa's friend would always come to his station and he told me they were going to the bathroom. I thought this was strange because why would they go to the bathroom together and they were always gone for quite a while. When he got back one time he told me that he had to go pray and my friend Stephanie told me about the room. He wants me to bring in a copy of the Bible for him and he will bring me a copy of the Koran. He specifically requested the Old Testament...I don't know if I have a copy lying around that I can give him...but i'll look. He also told me that he was going to bring in some Lamb for me to try...interesting...
It's also interesting to see the ways that people decide to strike up conversations. I work as an auditor where i pretty much just stand there and inspect packages before they are shipped and make sure everything is right...so people kind of have to go out of their way to talk to me if they are not packing at the station by mine. So people will come up and say things like, " So you are probably celebrating Christmas with your husband and kids aren't you?" WHAT???
Or saying things like this one guy who was commenting on the weather after work... Random Guy: Woo it got cold tonight Me: Yep, sure did Random Guy: You probably are married though aren't you? Me: Nope Random Guy: Oh, but you probably live with your boyfriend though huh? ?????????????????????????
I don't get it, but it definitely makes work worth going to every night lol. The people are really the ones that make the job.
The best question of the night... Woman: "Where is Maine? Is that somewhere in Ohio?" Me: "Maine? the state?" Woman: "Yeah" Me: "Oh...it's way up north near New England, like next to New Hampshire" Woman: "Oh, so it's not in Ohio?"
And with that...I'm going to bed :) Yet another night at the warehouse tomorrow...should be fun
| I just got home from my wonderful job at the Toys-R-Us warehouse. Believe it or not, I really enjoy this job. I know that it sounds very unexciting, but I really am having a good time. It may be because I know that it is just for a short amount of time and it will be over soon, but it's great fun...and great money.
Tonight I made a new friend. His name is Moussa and he's from Morocco (I think). I really couldn't understand what he was saying at times, but it was very entertaining to talk to him. I also makes the 10 hr shift go by a lot faster. I see many people that stand there and work and never talk to anyone the whole time. Their day must drag and drag. I think it is more fun to talk to the people around me and you really learn a lot. I think that it is so interesting to work with people from so many different places. It is also really funny hearing some of the things that they say. Today...Moussa asked me if I was born and raised in Columbus, but I thought that he said "Did you raise a puppy in Columbus?" HAHA He just started laughing at me. Good times.
Ok...so i now have posted twice in a week and i think that is breaking some kind of record for me. I need to go do some laundry and then try to go to bed before the sun comes up!
| So here I am...
back in action...
I guess...
Life is pretty crazy right now. I am working my booty off at Toy-R-Us...the warehouse...not the actual store. Let me tell you what. It is definitely an interesting experience working in a warehouse. There are all kinds of people and you never know what can happen. People try to strike up conversations in the most interesting ways, and then others try to avoid speaking all together. It's very intersting. But I must say that I do enjoy it. I think that I enjoy it because I know it is short term and i won't be there forever. I also enjoy it because I have had 3 different jobs in the 4 days that I work there. Doing something different everyday makes life just a little more exciting. However, the last job that I had there was a lot more exciting than the job that I had today...which i think is going to be more permanent :( I'm kinda sad about that...but oh well...life goes on. The only downfall of this job is that it really kills any other life I were to have outside of that place. I work 10 hr days from 3:30pm-1:30am...yeah...not much time to sleep or hang out w/ friends...oh well...:)
Life is good other than that. I just finished the worlds hardest quarter of grad school ever...and I'm still waiting on one of my grades...of course...but the deadline for that is quickly approaching. This quarter was good though. Besides the ridiculous amounts of work that I had to do, I had a great time working at Avalon Elementary. My 4th graders there ROCKED! I was sad to go, but I know that next quarter will be great as well. I'm at Gahanna Middle School East next quarter and for the rest of the year...that will definitely be a change of scenery from what I've experienced in the past...good times nontheless.
But yeah...YAY CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE! I'm really excited :) Ok...now I need to go wind down and try to fall asleep so that I can get up and do this all again tomorrow. YAY!!
